Two fall seasons ago, the trend-setting New York designers tried and failed to woo the fashion masses with mini skirts. Last fall, they put their effort into pants, very wide pants. They fared no better. Poorer, but trying to be wiser, the designers appeared to approach Fall ’89 differently. After almost two weeks of collection showings, it almost seemed as if they considered the way women like to dress. Really. They actually designed clothes that women have been creating for themselves for some time now.
