Two fall seasons ago, the trend-setting New York designers tried and failed to woo the fashion masses with mini skirts. Last fall, they put their effort into pants, very wide pants. They fared no better. Poorer, but trying to be wiser, the designers appeared to approach Fall ’89 differently. After almost two weeks of collection showings, it almost seemed as if they considered the way women like to dress. Really. They actually designed clothes that women have been creating for themselves for some time now. Instead of looking for inspiration from some 17th Century painter or old costume designer, they looked to the contemporary woman and some of her favorite dressing habits. Read more…

While looking over some men’s wear promotional information, I happened across a word that stood out like Svend Robinson at a Reform party caucus meeting. “Fun.” For many, “fun clothes” and “menswear” are considered mutually exclusive. Well, they’re not. But don’t try to sell that idea to most men, who think “fun” clothes are “trendy” clothes. And trendy clothes do go out of style.
