Clothes made of sweat suits
Popular items this season include upwardly mobile fashions made of sweatshirt fabric, fleecy on one side, smooth on the other. They have moved out of the gym and into the city streets, not necessarily on joggers. A cape-stole at $40 can wrap up cotton dresses and linen separates with a certain amount of sophistication.
Norma Kamali, who is responsible for the expansion of fashions in sweatshirt fabrics, has an extensive group at Bloomingdale’s in red, black, royal blue and dark green. The styles, which include a calf-length straight skirt that snaps down one side, have been selling in the traditional grey and white; the bright shades were added recently. The group includes a Victorian-looking snugly fitted jacket as well as straight pants and even a sweatshirt.
The Kamali group has “a sense of fashion excitement which attracts young customers,” says Kalman Ruttenstein, Bloomingdale’s vice-president in charge of fashion direction.
Zoran’s cotton knit separates are the big summer success at Saks Fifth Avenue; it seems that half the women working in the store are wearing them. They include short and knee-length skirts, each with elasticized waistlines, sweatshirts with and without hoods, straight pants and a go- with-everything cardigan.
