Decor, clothes inspire trends

Women rule the fashion world and they use the same criteria to buy furnishings as they do to fill their closets, he says. If their clothing tastes run to the simple, pastel colors, they’ll buy cushions and chairs that reflect this.

But if women are wearing big, bold prints and layered clothing, the home furnishings industry will respond in kind, he says.

Today small-scale print and plain, pastel colors dominate the clothing racks and can be found throughout the home furnishings on the market.

The small print can be found in sofa sets, on cushions, as an intricate feature in lamp bases, in curtain and drapery designs.

The natural look in clothes isn’t important and it’s been down-played as well in home furnishings.

Gaudy, bright colors, popular a few years ago, have been replaced both in the clothes and home furnishings by pale pinks, mints, yellows and mauves, he says.

The lines of the ready-to-wear styles are simple and are reflected in furnishings. Sculptured, shaped furniture is out; the look is the comfortable country style that can be created by straight lines, letting the colors and prints spark the image of the simple life.

Mr. Scott said he feels the move toward this ”simple country-style life” will continue to grow and be an important part of home furnishings of the future.

It’s an outgrowth of progress and the ”plasticized world we work in every day.” It indicates the need to get away from computers, sterile workplaces and industrial carpet to softer and more comfortable home environments.

Another indication of this trend is the growing popularity of house plants. ”People like to live with plants. It makes them feel like they’re out in the country, part of nature. They put plants everywhere in their home and it doesn’t matter if it’s an apartment downtown or a house in the suburbs. People want this more relaxed styling.” Also gone are the days when people decorated their homes for the neighbors and guests, not for themselves, he said. ”People choose furnishings they’re comfortable with and they don’t care what other people think. Especially the young people today, who make up most of the market. They’re not concerned about what the house looks like to others as long as they’re happy and they like it.”
