Cool dresses for a smooth summer look

Call it mini-scule, this latest trend for shaping up dresses for summer days and nights. Often cut as low as they are high, these cool dresses play it smooth in cotton knit, jersey or lycra mixed with cotton or nylon. There are no frills, no gathers, not a distracting detail.

These knits appeared in most designers’ collections, in repetitive tank dress styles, mock turtlenecks with cut-in shoulders, cap-sleeved curve-caressing T-shirts, and strategic cut-outs in skimpy dresses, shown with graphic punch and color.

Depending less on their shape and more on yours to give them life, these dresses have a relaxed sophistication. The trick is to keep them bare and spare, without excessive jewelry or accessories.

“Giggly” dresses, as designer Patrick Kelly describes them, can stretch from dawn to dusk, worn instead of beach shorts, over bathing suits, for city daywear and strictly light lunching, or dressed-up for evening with one or two well-chosen accessories.

To make sure the dress clings in all the right places, don’t buy it too tight. It makes a dramatic difference to any figure if the dress just skims your curves, without clutching them. Although many of these styles are shown in horizontal stripes this summer, choose the dark solids if you are not in ideal shape.

For fun, team the dress with kicky runners with the tongues turned down, or with calf-length leggings in the same shade and simple flats, with an oversized cotton scarf draped to cover your neckline and shoulders while exposing your legs. Or wear it under a big, long, man’s blazer.

You can get these inexpensive, ever-so-little dresses at several shops in the Lower Mainland.

Fitted mini tank dresses in lycra/cotton jersey are $29.99 in blue, black or striped grey at Harbour Casualwear. Loosely fitted cotton jersey tanks that reach the knee are in pastels for $12.99.

Cap-sleeved curvy minis in black, white or navy are $9.99, and waist-revealing dresses that secure a tank top to a slim skirt with four plastic hoops are $6.99, in pastels, all at Hollywood West.

Bryan’s has long-sleeved pucker jersey dresses with a large back cut-out, in black or red for $26.99. Mock turtleneck dresses with long sleeves are in black and white, red and white or blue and white jersey stripes for $29.99.

And, Harbour Casual wear has lycra/cotton minis with an off-shoulder cowl neck, cut with no excess, in raspberry, black, purple or striped grey for $29.99.
