Brace for the latest in fashion

Suspenders are great. The narrow rules of business dress often severely limit a man’s choices. But the new style of wearing suspenders (actually, the revival of an old custom) is an accepted way to express individualism and personal style.

Among the advantages: Suspenders create two strong lines up and down the body, giving a taller look; they eliminate the horizontal belt line that draws the eye to your middle (a less than ideal focus point); they make trousers hang better (they do almost as much for a pot belly as a rowing machine); and they can be as wild or as traditional as you like.

It is interesting – and fun – to be different. Wearing a pair of fanciful suspenders can be your own secret or one you share with only certain people.

It’s up to you who see them, because they show only when you want them to.

The style may not continue to be as popular as it is today, but “braces“ (as the more expensive stores call them) aren’t that costly. When they are no longer in vogue, you can abandon them without guilt.

Suspenders and necktie should not match exactly; the trick is to have colors in common. Repeat at least one color. A matching tie-and-suspender set looks like you were dressed out of a kit. Try a paisley with a stripe, or a solid with a dot. Incidentally, always buy braces that button onto your trousers. Clip-ons are too reminiscent of children’s winter mittens.
